My name is Alissa Magrum.
I run. I bike. I swim.
Recent hip surgery forced me to take a long break from running. My doctors told me that I would be spending my rehab time in the water.
So now I am swimming A LOT! I am up to 2 miles and feel great!
I am an athlete who likes and needs a training goal.
Because of THAT I set a goal to train for a long swim. (A 4.1 mile swim in Lake Austin from the 360 Bridge to the Tom Miller Dam sounded like a good and lofty goal.).
I am also a passionate person who prefers to train for a higher purpose or cause.
Because of THAT, I have created the Got2Swim 4.1 miles for Colin’s Hope to raise awareness for water safety and drowning prevention. (I am also a mom of a 5 yr old who spends a great deal of time in and around water with her family and friends.)
And I have committed to raising $10,000 and a bunch of attention for Colin’s Hope.
My original plan was to train all summer, raise a bunch of money and then jump in the water (with a kayak support for safety) on September 2 and swim 4.1 miles.
My revised plan involves all of that and more.
I talked about the swim and people wanted to jump in the water with me. There are now a team of us training, raising money and swimming. There are sponsors coming on board and there will be multiple stories in Austin Fit magazine. There will be a parade of swimmers, kayak supporters and stand up paddleboarders hitting Lake Austin at 9a on Thursday, September 2 for the Got2Swim 4.1 miles for Colin’s Hope.
There are 3 ways you can get involved.
1. Make a donation to help my reach my $10,000 fundraising goal! (I have challenged the entire team to try and raise more $$ than me. Please help me stay ahead! After all, this was my idea!) Yes, for donations of $500 and above, you can purchase advertising space on one of my arms. Fusion is the first sponsor!
2. Sign our Petition (soon to be available) and Commit to being a Water Guardian for kids and help educate your family and friends to do the same. If you are with children at a water source, please promise to never take your eyes off them. It only takes a second for a person to get into trouble in the water. Our goal is to get 10,000 people to sign!
3. Come cheer me and the team on at the swim finish (Tom Miller Dam) on Thursday September 2 at noon.
Thank you to the current Got2Swim 4.1 Miles for Colin’s Hope Sponsors: Austin Fit Magazine, Austin Sports Therapy, Clif Bar, Elite Fitness, Jack and Adam’s, Jason’s Deli, Moonfish Studio, Sports CenterSUP ATX, TYR, Working4Wellness, and Zico Coconut Water!
Now, I will go swim!
I’ll update my progress here or you can follow me on Twitter @alissaruns26
